| | Public Speaking Answers How can I beat Public Speaking Nerves Q. I am doing a research paper and need your professional advise. What is the best thing to do to overcome your fears of public speaking. e.g. breath deep, sing, think of something else A. It's a big subject - public speaking. You did not make clear whether the paper you're working on is about public speaking - or whether the issue is your own fear of doing speaking in public and making presentations.
The following are a few tips to start things off: Make really good eye contact with each member of your audience. Aim to maintain eye contact for 2-3 seconds per person - or per 'representative person' if talking with a large group. Sip water frequently - a dry mouth is to be avoided - it sends an "I'm nervous" signal to the brain. Know your material very well - so much so that you do not have to use notes - or, perhaps, just a crib list of main points. Use silence to advantage - be comfortable pausing after a sentence or two to allow them time to consider what you have said - and to allow you time to gather your thoughts and to breathe easily. The audience are on your side. Most, at least, will want you to do well - they do not want you to fail - that's too uncomfortable for them. - Mentally rehearse - imagine yourself giving talks to lots of different groups. It's the best way to get your mind visualising a successful talk.
