Fear of interviews, tests, and examinations

Taking part in an examination or interview or doing some form of test puts us in an interesting situation.

The interesting point is that, as an apparently well-adjusted person with a reasonable degree of self esteem, I am voluntarily putting myself in a situation - in an examination, interview, test, or assessment - where I will be evaluated by others.

I am entering the situation where my success will be determined by their opinion of my behaviour because it is the accepted way to further my career, open opportunities, provide me with the freedom to drive a care, etc.

How you perform in an interview can be critical to your career. There is a lot riding on the few minutes you have in the interview, on what you say, how you appear, what you ask of the interviewer, etc. It is no wonder that they can be daunting experiences.

It's a 'survival' situation

It's our emotions about being judged in this way which makes the situation so stressful. And which causes us to experience a variety of symptoms - sweating, shaking, upset digestion, frequent urination and bowel movements, etc.

The body recognises that a form of 'survival' is involved. Will I be allowed to be a car driver? Will 'they' deem me a suitable candidate to on to the next level in my education. Will they decide that I am worthy of this job or this promotion?

When our body recognises this it activates the Fight or Flight response and produces these physical symptoms.

NLP

NLP is used to develop the ideas and themes on this site. I have been using it for over two decades to help me understand how I and other people tick and in my work as a consultant and trainer - and it continually impresses me.
