Fear about my driving test

Q. I'm in my mid-30's and I still don't have my Driver's License. This is a very big obstacle for me (has been for quite sometime, hence 30-something without a Drivers License!). Not having a license has limited my travels, and completely embarrasses me. It embarrasses me to let you know of my weakness. Are there others out there like me? What can I do to dispel this irrational fear? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

A. Exams & Test Anxiety! Not much fun - and it can waste a lot of time - and opportunities.

And, yes, it is very common - it's why some people have to take their driving test so many times! A friend of mine is proud to have, years ago, passed on his 7th attempt!

First off - recognise that it is a phobia. It is a phobia of being judged/tested - very similar to the fear of public speaking. And all of the advice on how to handle phobias apply.

The key thing is to recognise how your imagination conjures up disaster movies at the very thought of being ‘examined' for your test.

Then work through a hierarchy of steps to reduce this fear. Print out the pages from the site so you can work through them systematically.
